The Intrepid Museum celebrates the people and technological innovations that have shaped, and continue to shape, our world. It is an immersive and fun place where history and STEM are showcased through marvels such as the world’s first space shuttle; the world’s fastest commercial airliner; a nuclear-weapons-carrying submarine; and dozens of military aircraft, including a supersonic spy plane, all displayed in and around the historic landmark aircraft carrier, Intrepid.

Step aboard the aircraft carrier Intrepid which proudly served in World War II, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War. The flight deck features a collection of more than two dozen authentically restored aircraft set against the backdrop of stunning city views that can only be found on the Intrepid. Enter the Space Shuttle Pavilion that showcases the space shuttle Enterprise and 17 dynamic exhibit zones featuring original artifacts, films and audio such as actual conversations between mission control and pilots during the Enterprise flight tests. Step inside the Growler submarine to understand the fascinating world of undersea warfare.

Through exhibitions, educational programming, and the foremost collection of technologically groundbreaking aircraft and vessels, the Intrepid Museum takes visitors of all ages and abilities on an interactive journey through history to learn about American innovation and bravery.

The Intrepid Museum was founded in 1982 with the acquisition of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, now a National Historic Landmark, which served tours of duty in World War II and the Vietnam War, and was a recovery vessel for the Gemini and Mercury space missions.

The Intrepid Museum is home to the following permanent exhibits, in addition to hosting rotating exhibitions on naval history, space exploration, technology and more.

Aircraft Carrier Intrepid
Launched in 1943, the former aircraft carrier USS Intrepid fought in World War II, surviving five kamikaze attacks and one torpedo strike. The ship later served in the Cold War and the Vietnam War. Intrepid also served as a NASA recovery vessel in the 1960s. It was decommissioned in 1974, and today is berthed on the Hudson River as the centerpiece of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

Space Shuttle Pavilion
The Space Shuttle Pavilion showcases the space shuttle Enterprise, the prototype NASA orbiter that paved the way for America’s successful space shuttle program. Seventeen dynamic exhibit zones feature original artifacts, photographs, audio, and films that immerse visitors in the science and history of Enterprise and the space shuttle era.

Submarine Growler
The former USS Growler first opened at the Intrepid Museum in 1989 and is the only American guided missile submarine open to the public. Growler offers museum visitors a firsthand look at life aboard a submarine and a close-up inspection of the once "top-secret" missile command center. Access is available to the various compartments as they were used during operations.

British Airways Concorde
The fastest Atlantic crossing by any Concorde occurred on February 7, 1996, and took only 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 59 seconds. This record-breaking plane — the Concorde Alpha Delta G-BOAD — is yours to explore at the Intrepid Museum complex on Pier 86.

Exploreum
The Exploreum is a fully interactive exhibit space thoughtfully designed for families and kids of all ages. Climb into a Bell 47 helicopter, navigate through an interactive submarine, lay in a sailor’s bunk and more—all with unlimited photo ops.

Aviator Grill is open to the general public and museum visitors for breakfast and lunch. This family-friendly restaurant is located on the second level of the museum’s welcome center, overlooking the pier. Aviator Grill offers a full, chef-prepared menu of hearty fare, including burgers, fresh bread, custom pizzas, and more.
